Measuring your PD

Do it at home in two minutes. A mirror and a millimeter ruler is all it takes.

The pupillary distance (PD) is the distance, measured in millimeters, between the pupils of your eyes. It is sometimes also known as the distance PD. An accurate PD measurement is required in order to make prescription glasses and is an essential part of your prescription, particularly for stronger corrective lenses.

Your PD may already be included on your prescription, in which case you can enter it during the order process — see what is pupillary distance for details. You can also ask your optician for your PD if they do not include it, although there may be an additional charge for this service.

An optician's measurement is more accurateWe strongly recommend having an optician measure your PD professionally, particularly for a stronger prescription. Measuring it yourself is a good fallback, not a first choice.

Measuring it yourself

You will need a well-lit room, a mirror, and a ruler with millimeter markings.

Line the 0mm mark up with the center of your right pupil, then read off the center of your left.
  1. Hold a millimeter ruler up to the bridge of your nose in front of a mirror so you can read the markings, or have a friend help you.
  2. Line the 0mm mark on the ruler up with the center of your right pupil.
  3. Without moving the ruler, note the distance that corresponds to the center of your left pupil.
  4. That is your PD — for example, 63mm.
  5. Repeat two or three times until you are confident the reading is accurate.
  6. Make a note of it, and enter it during the order process when we send you our send us your prescription request.
